Colour (9/10)

Vivid jade green in the tin. Bright, with no yellow or olive cast. Consistent with a well-kept first harvest.

Dry aroma (8/10)

Fresh vegetal notes, young pea, a light sea edge. No perceptible oxidation. Less complex than a top-tier Uji Gokou, but clean and appealing.

Foam (9/10)

Dense, persistent foam. With 2 g in 70 ml at 70 °C and a 100-prong chasen it holds for more than 90 seconds without collapsing. Even microbubble.

Umami (8/10)

Umami present and recognisable from the first sip. It does not reach the depth of a first-harvest Uji Gokou, but it is clearly above the culinary grade powders sold as ceremonial.

Sweetness (8/10)

Moderate, clean sweetness. A long finish that moves gently from umami into sweetness, with no noticeable astringency left behind.

Astringency (9/10)

Very low. Bitterness only shows right at the end, and it is clean. Well suited to starting out without a whisk, or with water whose temperature you cannot control precisely.

Verdict

Matcha Zen is the cheapest ceremonial per gram of the ones we have tasted: at €209.90/kg it is the most affordable certified ceremonial matcha in our comparison. Matcha & Co works out at €966.67/kg, Cosmic at €816.67/kg and the Japanese Tea Hub at €1,400.00/kg. For a British reader the gap is starker still: ceremonial grade in the UK usually sells for £20 to £45 per 30 g tin, which is between roughly £667 and £1,500 a kilo. The only products we have seen at a lower price per kilo are culinary matchas labelled as ceremonial. Its Chinese origin is not a flaw: the region has a thousand-year tea tradition and there are good producers in it. Verifiable EU organic certification and a consistent profile make it a sound reference for anyone who wants real ceremonial matcha without paying first-harvest Uji prices. For everyday drinking and for lattes, it is hard to beat in its bracket.
