History
Omotesenke was founded by Kōshin Sōsa (1613-1672), Sōtan’s son. The name «Omote» (front) refers to where the family residence stood in relation to Urasenke’s. The historic seat, the Fushin-an, is in Kyoto, a few metres from Urasenke’s.
Style, and how it differs from Urasenke
Omotesenke is known for its more reserved character and its emphasis on koicha. Its movements tend to be more restrained than Urasenke’s. The usucha foam is less pronounced, a real and visible technical difference. The school is less active internationally, but holds a solid presence in Japan and in Japanese communities abroad.
