Why Uji is different
Uji is not just a region: it is the result of 600 years of cultivar selection, a microclimate formed by the mists of the Uji river and the north slope of Mount Kuze, and breeding programmes that produced cultivars such as Gokou, Asahi and Samidori. Nothing anywhere else matches the deep umami of a first-harvest Uji Gokou.
The 2025 production crisis (harvest down 19%, prices up 265%) has cut the availability of first-harvest Uji in Europe still further. What you find in this ranking is what actually exists and can be bought today, from Spain, where we buy our samples.

The awkward question about Matcha & Co
Matcha & Co states an Uji origin for its Premium range on its website. The sensory profile of the blend (lighter body, less pronounced umami than pure Uji) is nonetheless consistent with Kagoshima matcha in the mix, which is common in commercial volume blends. This is not a question of honesty, but the difference between «contains Uji» and «pure first-harvest Uji».
