Sensory analysis
Colour (9/10)
Bright jade green with a slightly more yellow-green cast than pure Uji, typical of Kagoshima cultivars grown on volcanic soil.
Aroma (8/10)
Fresh, grassy, with a light citrus note that sets it apart from the earthier Uji matchas. Pleasant and easy.
Foam (9/10)
Excellent foam. Dense, persistent, even. Kagoshima cultivars respond well to whisking.
Umami (7/10)
Moderate umami. The Kagoshima profile is fresher and lighter than Uji. It lacks the depth of an Uji Gokou or Asahi, but it is recognisably above culinary grade.
Astringency (8/10)
Low. Very approachable. A good place to start, and a good fit for anyone who prefers a less intense profile.
Verdict
Cosmic Matcha is the most interesting Kagoshima of the ones we have tasted, with traceability down to the named cultivar. The profile is fresh and lively, well suited to lattes and to everyday drinking. Anyone after the depth and complexity of a first-harvest Uji should look elsewhere. For everyone else it is a solid choice at a competitive price.
