The state of the practice in Spain
The tea ceremony has a firmer footing in Spain than you might expect. Japanese centres, cultural associations and a few independent spaces offer everything from one-off demonstrations to structured courses running several years.
Barcelona
La Casa Japonesa (Carrer Casp, Barcelona) runs regular tea ceremony sessions led by practitioners trained in Japan. The Consulate General of Japan in Barcelona works with Urasenke on annual demonstrations. The Institut Japonès has also run introductory courses.
Madrid
The Japan Foundation (Fundación Japón) in Madrid runs tea ceremony demonstrations at its space on Calle Guzmán el Bueno. The Museo Nacional de Artes Decorativas has hosted demonstrations tied to exhibitions of Japanese ceramics.
Other cities
In Valencia, Seville and San Sebastián there are informal groups tied to Japanese cultural associations. Searching «tea ceremony + city» on social media usually gives up-to-date results, since these groups organise mainly through Instagram and Meetup.
Learning online
Since the 2020 pandemic, Urasenke International has offered introductory courses online, in English. They are a good way in for anyone wanting to grasp the fundamentals before looking for a teacher in person.
